New Delhi, Aug 22 (KNN) In order to authenticate the genuineness of Khadi textiles including cotton, wool and silk, the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) has proposed the making of Khadi mark tags and stickers to be affixed on its products.

The Reform Implementation Division of KVIC under the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) is seeking proposals from agencies for making Khadi mark woven labels, according to an official notice.

The Khadi mark will lend an identity and help in positioning and building brand of khadi products. It will also guarantee the quality of hand spun, hand woven and other materials made of natural fibres.

Funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the objective of the Khadi Reform and Development Program (KRDP) is to strengthen the khadi and village industries sub-sector with enhanced sustainability of their products, increased employment generation and incomes, artisan welfare and development of selected traditional village industries.
The reform of production and marketing of khadi will lead to sustainable employment opportunities at low per capita investment, it said.

One of the key priority areas under the KRDP is making Khadi textile as a niche hand spun and woven fabric to become commercially viable in the highly competitive textiles market.

A necessary condition for such a market niche to be sustainable is the creation of distinct identity of khadi through a mark, symbol or logo.

The Khadi mark will developed under the guidance of the KVIC. As the promoter and guardian of the proposed mark, it will monitor, verify and enforce the genuineness of the product sold in markets in the name of Khadi.

Khadi is handcrafted textile of India. It was livery of freedom in independent India, now mandated as a livery of economic freedom in India for the rural artisans. (KNN/GUNJ)
