MSMEs Can Boost Lead Generation With Reviews, Referrals And Online Visibility
New Delhi, Oct 5 (KNN) Cold calling remains popular among Indian MSMEs because it requires little upfront investment, specialised technology or time to generate leads. However, changing buyer behaviour, tighter telecom rules and rising spam detection are making it increasingly challenging.
According to NASSCOM, MSMEs should instead adopt a mix of strategies focused on customer intent, credibility, useful content, referrals and faster response times.
Buyer Research Is Reducing the Effectiveness of Cold Calls
Outbound calling is becoming more challenging as tighter regulations, spam labels and call-screening features limit access to potential customers. At the same time, customers increasingly research and compare providers before making contact, making online visibility more important for MSMEs.
Businesses can improve discoverability by maintaining an updated Google Business Profile with accurate categories, services, hours, photos and customer responses.
Consistent name, address and phone details across websites, directories and social media, along with service-specific pages and relevant search terms, can further strengthen visibility.
Reviews and Third-Party References Can Strengthen Credibility
Customer reviews can strengthen inbound lead generation, with recent and detailed feedback often more useful than simply accumulating ratings. MSMEs can encourage satisfied customers to leave reviews and respond constructively to negative feedback.
Industry directories, trade associations, local media and marketplace profiles can further improve visibility, particularly as AI-powered search draws on multiple information sources.
Content should focus on questions customers already ask rather than maintaining a blog for its own sake. Topics can cover pricing, timelines, services, common problems and objections, while completed projects can highlight the problem, approach and outcome. The priority should be useful, relevant answers rather than high content volume.
Referrals Can Become a More Structured Lead Channel
Referrals can be a valuable lead source for MSMEs. Businesses can seek referrals from satisfied customers, build partnerships with non-competing firms and use trade associations and industry networks to generate introductions. Tracking referral sources and maintaining regular contact can help sustain these relationships.
Response speed also matters, as customers may contact multiple businesses after an online search. MSMEs can reduce lost leads by assigning enquiry responsibility, using WhatsApp Business and saved replies, sending automated acknowledgements and tracking enquiry outcomes.
MSMEs Can Build Lead Generation in Phases
For MSMEs with limited resources, a phased approach is more practical. Businesses can first improve response times and online profiles, followed by reviews, referrals, local search optimisation and service-specific content.
Key metrics should include enquiries by source, qualified leads, conversion rates and response times, as higher enquiry volumes alone do not guarantee sales.
The shift from outbound to inbound lead generation takes time. While profile and response improvements can deliver quicker results, reviews, referrals, organic search and content require sustained effort. As AI-powered search draws on multiple sources, accurate business information, reviews and useful content may become increasingly important.
The focus is therefore shifting towards building lead-generation assets that deliver lasting value rather than relying solely on daily outbound activity.
