Tuticorin, Nov 20 (KNN)  The small and medium scale industries have suffered almost 50 per cent loss in production due to frequent power cuts every day in Tamil Nadu’s Tuticorin district, a media report said.

The fabrication industry, which involves welding and lathe works is solely dependent on electricity has been the worst affected.

Production decline was also seen in other industries such as those manufacturing salt, safety matches, chemicals and rubber.

There is a looming fear that the livelihood of the workforce may be affected.  This is evident from the work shifts which have come down to two a day instead of three shifts, the report said.

Other larger industries have been running on diesel power generators but they have been unable to get a good market price to offset the high production cost.

Decline in production had also aggravated problems concerning repayment of loans and this has ultimately led to an increase in non-performing asset ratio, it added.
Thoothukudi District Tiny and Small Scale Industries Association (THUDITSSIA) vice president Nehruprakash sought an early commissioning of the new power projects in Tuticorin.  (KNN/Bureau)
