Chandigarh, Mar 18 (KNN)  At one fifth the cost of Olive oil, Rice bran oil is 1.4 times more effective that the former in reducing cholesterol.  Further the rice based oil can reduce triglycerides 4 times more effectively compared to olive oil, according to a study.

The clinical study which was a comparative evaluation of effective lipid lowering activity of rice bran oil, olive oil and groundnut oil included a clinical investigation of individuals with high levels of cholesterol in the blood.

Conducted by the Departments of Pharmacology and Endocrinology, Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, the study was commissioned by Chairman, Ricela Health Foods Limited, A R Sharma.

The study report said, “In the present study, physically refined Rice Bran Oil produced under special controlled conditions containing 1270 mg/ 100 grams of Oryzanol was used, which provided daily intake of 317.5 mg of Oryzanol at the recommended level of visible fat intake which is 25 grams per day.

“The percentage decrease in LDL cholesterol, Total Cholesterol and Triglyceride level was maximum and significant in physically refined Rice bran Oil group as compared to groundnut oil and extra virgin olive oil groups. Keeping the above results in view it can be concluded that physically refined Rice Bran oil is more effective for lipid profile management as compared to Olive oil and Groundnut Oil,” it added.

Sharma’s efforts in this field paid off when he was awarded the MSME First National Award for Innovation in the medium enterprises category recently.

Oryzanol is a nutrient that controls cholesterol, hypertension, diabetes, gastrointestinal disorders like stress induced ulcers, osteoporosis, etc.

On the other hand, triglycerides are a type of fat found in the blood.  Too much of this type of fat may raise the risk of coronary artery disease, especially in women.

Widely used in countries like Japan, Korea, China and Thailand, rice bran oil is known as “Heart Oil” because of its scientifically proven cholesterol lowering properties.

Based in Dhuri in district Sangrur of Punjab which is one of the largest rice producing districts of India, A P Organics Limited was established in 1992 with the objective of producing and promoting rice bran oil as the healthiest cooking oil.

Although India is the second largest producer of paddy in the world having potential to produce over 12 lakh tonnes per annum of this healthy cooking oil, this nutritious oil unfortunately was mainly used in the country for the manufacture of soaps and detergents.

Ricela Health Foods Limited (formerly called as A P Solvex Limited) enjoys the distinction of being the first company of the country, who made pioneering effort by setting up a 80 TPD Rice Bran Oil Extraction Plant in 1993 and 25 TPD Rice Bran Oil Refining Plant in 1994.

The process of refining was developed in house which was based upon Physical Refining Technique in which unlike the conventional process of Chemical Refining, no acid (caustic) is used.

The patent for the process is registered with the Government of India in the name of Chairman and Managing Director of the company, A R Sharma.

The Company had received three national awards before this for R&D, innovation and entrepreneurship.  (KNN/ES)
