Thiruvananthapuram, June 17 (KNN) The National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology (NIIST), Thiruvananthapuram in association with the Trivandrum Regional Centre of Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers (IIChE) is organising a one day seminar on environment management for small and medium scale industries at the Industrial Estate here on June 20.

The seminar aims at identifying relevant and unique environmental problems faced by the small and medium scale industries in the region which require R&D intervention and technical support for resolving the issues.

It will provide a very unique platform for industries, allied associations and government agencies to discuss about the environmental issues of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) with a short presentation.

The one day programme will discuss the issues associated with the sectors like mining, agro processing, marine products, traditional industries, process industries, environmental management companies, tourism, municipal authorities and health.

Each sector faces specific environmental problems with regard to management of wastewater, waste air and solid wastes containing biodegradable, non-biodegradable and hazardous materials. Solutions to such issues can reduce material and energy consumption, reduce occupational health hazard, increase public acceptance, and reduce environmental impacts.

Senior management from industries, representatives of industry associations, representatives of traditional and co-operative sectors, research scientists from government sectors and policy makers will be participating at the event.

There will be panel discussions for formulating R&D strategies to be adopted for managing environmental issues in various regionally important sectors. (KNN/ST)
