Puducherry, Feb 24 (KNN) Pondicherry University has invented a solar-powered drier which can be boon to the food processing industry as it can be used to dry agricultural produce, poultry and sea food.

It comprises of two components: a solar air heater fitted with panels of two square metres each that can generate hot air; and a drying chamber that dehydrates moisture content from different kinds of food, Assistant Professor, Centre for Green Energy Technology, Pondicherry University, A Sreekumar told KNN.

The project according to Sreekumar was awarded by UGC and developed over a year.   Several students were involved in various aspects of the invention.

While the gadget can generate heat upto 85 degree Celsius, there is a provision to control temperature.   Although the heat required varies from product to product, most food items such as fruits and vegetables require about 50-55 degree Celsius.

The cost of the system is approximately Rs 30,000.

The professor said the product which has the potential to generate livelihood has been tested on various food items.

The University is now trying to patent the invention; the technology could be marketed soon.   (KNN/ES)
