BIS Introduces New Safety Standards For Electric Vehicles In India

New Delhi, Jun 24 (KNN) The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has unveiled two new sets of guidelines aimed at enhancing the safety of electric vehicles across multiple categories.

The standards, designated as IS 18590: 2024 and IS 18606: 2024, specifically target vehicles in the L, M, and N categories, which encompass two-wheelers, four-wheelers, and goods trucks, respectively.

These new regulations primarily focus on the powertrain components of electric cars, buses, and trucks, including critical elements such as the motor and transmission.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, "These standards focus on the critical component of electric vehicles--the powertrain--ensuring it meets stringent safety requirements. Additionally, they emphasise the safety and performance of batteries, ensuring they are both powerful and secure."

The introduction of these guidelines brings the total number of local standards dedicated to electric vehicles and their accessories, including charging systems, to 30.

This comprehensive approach underscores India's commitment to fostering a more sustainable, environmentally friendly, and efficient transportation system.

In response to the growing popularity of electric vehicles beyond traditional cars and trucks, BIS has also introduced IS 18294: 2023.

This standard establishes safety guidelines specifically for e-rickshaws and E-Karts, aiming to ensure the safe construction and operation of these vehicles to protect both drivers and passengers.

As the National Standards Body of India, operating under the Department of Consumer Affairs, Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, BIS plays a crucial role in formulating, recognising, and promoting Indian Standards.

The organisation's efforts extend to assisting industries in upgrading the quality of their products and services, further reinforcing India's commitment to safety and quality in the rapidly evolving electric vehicle sector.

These new standards represent a significant step forward in India's ongoing transition to electric mobility, addressing key safety concerns and promoting innovation in the industry.
