CAIT disappointed over non-inclusion of domestic players in draft e-commerce policy

New Delhi, Feb 25 (KNN) The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT), which has been pushing the government to release a national policy on e-commerce, has expressed disappointment over domestic e-commerce players not being included in the draft e-commerce policy.

The traders’ body said that the draft of e-commerce policy released by the Government, though a logical draft inclusive of various core issues including data protection, treatment of FDI in marketplace model and many more, at the same time left out inclusion of domestic e-commerce players.

“We fear that it will culminate into an uneven level playing field and will give liberty to domestic e-commerce players to adopt malpractices as were being done by global e-commerce players," said Praveen Khandelwal, Secretary General of CAIT.

He stated that it will damage the basic intent of the Government to bring every stakeholder at par.

Highlighting the other issues, Khandelwal said “Likewise the issue of brand selling is also contentious in the draft which gives an edge to big players and will lead to monopolistic market.”

He said that the draft has been prepared by bureaucracy without holding any consultation with stakeholders and therefore seems to be far away from ground realities in several terms though in many matters it’s a good piece of document.

Several provisions of the draft policy need clarification from the Government before framing any final opinion, he added.

Since the last date for submission of objections and suggestions is March 9, the CAIT will immediately seek all such clarifications from the Ministry so that logical objections and suggestions could be submitted timely.(KNN/YV)
