Coal Ministry Holds Hyderabad Roadshow To Boost Coal & Lignite Gasification Projects

New Delhi, Jun 12 (KNN) The Ministry of Coal organised a roadshow on coal and lignite gasification projects in Hyderabad, bringing together industry representatives, technology providers, investors, financial institutions, coal companies and government officials to discuss opportunities in the sector.

The event focused on investment prospects, policy support, technology developments and implementation strategies aimed at promoting coal gasification and expanding value-added utilisation of domestic coal resources.

Union Coal and Mines Minister G. Kishan Reddy said India possesses nearly 400 billion tonnes of coal reserves and remains the world's second-largest producer and consumer of coal. He highlighted coal gasification as a strategic tool to reduce dependence on imports of products such as methanol, ammonia, fertiliser feedstocks and industrial chemicals.

Reddy said the government has placed the draft Request for Proposal (RFP) for coal gasification projects in the public domain and invited stakeholder feedback to strengthen the framework.

He also highlighted the Cabinet-approved coal gasification promotion scheme, stating that government support and reforms are aimed at creating a favourable environment for investments in the sector.

Minister of State for Coal and Mines Satish Chandra Dubey said the Rs 37,500 crore Scheme for Promotion of Surface Coal and Lignite Gasification Projects is intended to support efficient and value-added use of coal resources while reducing import dependence.

He noted that the initiative is expected to attract investments, encourage technology adoption and generate employment opportunities.

Coal Secretary Vikram Dev Dutt said coal gasification can help produce fuels, fertilisers, chemicals and industrial inputs currently imported in large quantities.

He urged industry stakeholders, technology providers and financial institutions to participate in shaping the final framework through consultations on the draft RFP.

The roadshow also featured presentations on the draft RFP, covering eligibility conditions, bidding methodology, incentives, coal linkage provisions and project milestones.

Organisations including Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited and Central Institute of Mining and Fuel Research showcased indigenous coal gasification technologies, while states such as Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh and Telangana presented policy incentives and investment opportunities.

An interactive session addressed issues related to project financing, technology partnerships, coal availability, environmental clearances and infrastructure requirements. Stakeholders from industry and financial institutions participated in discussions on the emerging coal gasification ecosystem.

The ministry said coal gasification is expected to support import substitution, strengthen domestic manufacturing, improve energy security and contribute to industrial development as part of India's self-reliance goals.
