Indian Railways Approves Rs 270 Crore Kavach Project on East Coast Railway
New Delhi, Jun 22 (KNN) Indian Railways has approved the deployment of the Kavach automatic train protection system on 631 route kilometres of the East Coast Railway network at an estimated cost of Rs 270 crore.
The project will cover six railway sections namely Baghuapal–Budhapank, Haridaspur–Paradeep, Khurda Road–Balangir, Naupada–Gunupur, Lanjigarh Road–Junagarh and Bobbili–Salur.
The approved work is part of Indian Railways' ongoing programme to expand Kavach, the indigenous Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system, across the national rail network using an LTE-based communication backbone.
Kavach is designed to prevent signal passing at danger (SPAD), over-speeding and train collisions by continuously monitoring train movements and automatically applying brakes when required.
According to the Railways, the deployment is expected to improve operational safety and support more reliable train operations, including during low-visibility conditions such as dense fog.
The system will be implemented on key passenger and freight corridors within the East Coast Railway zone.
