Samadhan Samaroh 2026: Supreme Court’s Special Lok Adalat Settles Over 400 Cases On First Day

New Delhi, Aug 24 (KNN) More than 400 cases were amicably settled on the first day of the Special Lok Adalat at the Supreme Court on August 21, as part of Samadhan Samaroh 2026, an initiative aimed at promoting consensual resolution of pending disputes.

More than 600 cases were listed before 16 Special Lok Adalat benches, each comprising two sitting Supreme Court judges along with senior advocates, Advocates-on-Record and other lawyers.

Wide Range of Disputes

The two-day Special Lok Adalat, being held under the guidance of Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant, concluded on August 23. The initiative was part of the Supreme Court Action for Mediated Adjudication and Disputes Harmonisation Across the Nation (SAMADHAN), which began on April 21.

The benches facilitated discussions between parties and helped them explore mutually acceptable settlements. The cases included matrimonial and property disputes, motor accident claims, land acquisition and compensation matters, tax disputes, and service and labour cases.

The matters had undergone a pre-settlement process since the launch of Samadhan Samaroh in April, with litigants and their lawyers being engaged to assess the possibility of resolving the disputes amicably.

The initiative seeks to strengthen consensual dispute resolution, reduce litigation costs and ease the burden on courts by encouraging parties to settle disputes through dialogue and consent.

How it Strengthens Access to Justice

Settling 400+ cases on the first day demonstrates how consensual mechanisms can resolve disputes much faster than prolonged litigation. 

Lok Adalats encourage dialogue and mutually acceptable settlements rather than prolonged adversarial proceedings, which can make the justice process less intimidating. Every dispute resolved through settlement frees judicial time and resources for cases that genuinely require adjudication. This can indirectly improve access for other litigants. 

The larger significance of Samadhan Samaroh initiative is that it shifts the focus from adjudicating every dispute to resolving appropriate disputes efficiently.
