The eastern industrial corridor will cover Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Ambala, Saharanpur, Delhi, Roorkee, Moradabad, Bareilly, Aligarh, Kanpur, Lucknow, Allahabad, Varanasi, Patna, Hazaribagh, Dhanbad, Asansol, Durgapur and Calcutta, according to an official notification.
It will use the eastern dedicated freight corridor — railway tracks to ferry freight or goods. The eastern freight corridor extends from Ludhiana in Punjab to Dankuni, which is 20 km from Calcutta.
Further, it will use the inland waterway being developed along National Waterways 1 which extends from Allahabad to Haldia, the statement added.
The Prime Minister yesterday approved the Amritsar-Delhi-Calcutta industrial corridor and has constituted an inter-ministerial group to prepare a feasibility report.
In an industrial corridor, the government helps set up high-speed transport network, cargo shipment hubs and other required infrastructure for industries.
Corridor plans include cities and townships and are expected to push economic and social growth in a region.
“This is one of the most densely populated regions in the world and houses about 40 per cent of India’s population. This is a region which needs major push for industrialisation and job-creation and this corridor will act as a catalyst for growth,” the PMO statement said yesterday.
It will be patterned on the Delhi-Mumbai industrial corridor (DMIC), which is being developed with support from the Japanese government. The 1,483km DMIC was approved in 2007.
The DMIC includes plans for 24 new cities, industrial units and townships with an overall investment of more than USD 100 billion. The DMIC is expected to attract large investments leading to rapid industrial growth in Rajasthan, Gujarat, Haryana and Maharashtra.
The inter-ministerial group for the Amritsar Delhi Kolkata Industrial Corridor will examine the feasibility of setting up the Amritsar-Delhi-Calcutta (ADC) industrial corridor along with the structural and financing arrangements that would be required to operationalise it at the earliest. The IMG (inter-ministerial group) will give its report within a month, the PMO statement added.
The inter-ministerial group will be headed by the secretary of the department of industrial policy and promotion. The group will also have as members the secretaries of economic affairs, road transport and shipping ministries, and the chairperson of the Railway Board. (KNN)
