629 buildings in 18 states identified for rooftop solar projects

New Delhi, Jan 7 (KNN)  The Ministry of Urban Development has launched a mission to generate 100 MW of solar power in the next two years through roof mounted solar panels.  It has identified 629 building in 18 states for the rooftop solar projects.

In this connection, a MOU was signed here yesterday by Central Public Works Department (CPWD), the construction major under the Ministry and Solar Power Corporation of India (SPCI) of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy Sources, according to an official release.

Signatories to the MOU were Director General of CPWD, B Bhatia and Managing Director of SECI, Dr Ashvini Kumar.   

Others present on the occasion were Minister of Urban Development, M. Venkaiah Naidu; Minister of Power and NRES, Piyush Goyal; Minister of State for Urban Development, Babul Supriyo; Secretary (UD), Shankar Aggarwal; and senior officials.   

As per the MoU, CPWD would provide 629 buildings owned and maintained by it in 18 states for installing solar photovoltaic projects on rooftops by the executing agency SECI for generation of power.  Further, a total roof area of 16,76,233 sq.mts is available on these buildings out of which 60 per cent would be used for power generation. Solar panels would be connected to the grid.

To begin with, 1 MW capacity solar panels each will installed over central government buildings in New Delhi like Nirman Bhawan, Krishi Bhawan, IP Bhawan, Vidyut Bhawan, Shram Shakti Bhawan etc., within 6 months. CPWD has installed 930 kw capacity on Indira Paryavaran Bhawan and Nirman Bhawan in New Delhi so far.

The Ministry of Urban Development has also proposed roof mounted solar power generation in 18 states at various capacities, making a total of 100.30 MW.  (KNN/ES)
