68.48 lakh tourists in 2013, increase of 4.1% over previous year

New Delhi, Jan 10 (KNN)  Despite negative signals from the global economy, the tourism sector has increased growth in 2013 by 4.1 per cent with an estimated 68.48 lakh tourists visiting India against 65.78 lakh in 2012, an official statement from the Ministry of Tourism said.

The number of foreign tourist arrivals in the country in 2013 showed an increase of about 4.1 per cent with an estimated 68.48 lakh tourists visiting India against 65.78 lakh in 2012, an official statement said.

Foreign exchange earnings from the ministry during 2013 were around Rs 1,05,836 crore with a growth of 12.0 per cent over the same period in 2012.

Meanwhile, domestic tourism continues to be the main contributor to the sector providing much needed resilience, it said.

Last year, in an effort to develop quality tourism infrastructure at tourist destinations and circuits, the ministry had sanctioned Rs 4090.31 crore for a total number of 1226 tourism projects.

It had also launched a scheme for development of nationally and internationally important destinations and circuits through mega projects.

Further, in order to meet the huge skill gap in the hospitality industry, the ministry has adopted a multipronged strategy which includes strengthening and expanding the institutional infrastructure for training and education.

It has also reviewed liberalisation of visa regime. Having implemented the “Visa on Arrival” (VoA) Scheme, foreign tourists registered a growth of 26.5 per cent.

Some of the campaigns launched were - clean India, 777 days of the Indian Himalayan, virtual walking tours, 360 degree tours, travel planner, photo and video banks and light shows.

Also, the ministry offices overseas have participated in the major international travel fairs and exhibitions in important tourist generating markets the world over as well as in emerging and potential markets to showcase and promote the tourism products of the country.  (KNN/ST)
