Aadhaar authentication to be mandatory for GST registration

Bengaluru, Dec 24 (KNN) Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi, who is also the convenor of Group of Ministers (GoM) on integrated Goods and Services Tax (GST), has said that Aadhaar will be mandatory for new dealers for registration.

Briefing about the decisions taken at the GST meeting here to media, the Minister said, ''We have noticed in two years that a large number of operators are registering themselves as GST dealers. They also make fake invoices. Aadhaar authentication will be made mandatory for new dealers for registration and those failing or declining their Aadhaar numbers would have to undergo physical verification.''

Modi also said that GST Council is verifying the 66.79 lakh new registrations by taxpayers, which could be fake or pertain to shell companies.

''We are strictly monitoring the new taxpayers to ensure they are not fake," he said.

The new taxpayers, who are 66.7 lakh in number, hardly pay 15% of tax. So, whatever taxes we are getting from them is only 15% of taxes, which is about Rs 10,000 crore.

The number of registrations under GST stood at 1.21 crore and of this, 55.04 lakh dealers had migrated from the pre-GST regime and 66.79 lakh were new registrations since the launch of GST.  He said dealers who migrated to the GST contributed 85% of the total revenue.

A total 24.86 lakh fake or bogus registered dealers had been weeded out from the GST.

While commenting on blocking of e-way bill generation for non-compliant assesses, he said, ''e-way bills would be automatically blocked for dealers who had not filed their monthly GST Return (GSTR)-3B for two consecutive months. About 3.47 lakh dealers’ e-way bills had been blocked."

Another decision taken in the meeting was the late fee of Rs 100 per day under the GSTR-1 or the outward supply has been waived, he said.
