After Gujarat, Barrier-Less Tolling System Launched In NCR

New Delhi, May 12 (KNN) Close on the heels of rolling out India’s first Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling system at the Chorayasi Toll Plaza on the Surat–Bharuch section of NH-48 in Gujarat, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has launched another barrier-less tolling system on the Mundka–Bakkarwala section of Urban Extension Road-II in the National Capital Region.

The MLFF system introduces a contactless and barrier-free toll collection mechanism that enables vehicles to pass through toll plazas without stopping. The system combines Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology with FASTag-based electronic toll collection for automated user fee collection.

According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the initiative is intended to improve traffic flow, reduce waiting time at toll plazas and lower fuel consumption on national highways.

Speaking at the event, Gadkari said the new tolling framework would help reduce operational costs associated with physical toll plazas and improve overall efficiency in toll collection operations.

He stated that toll collection expenditure, which earlier accounted for nearly 15 per cent of operational costs, is expected to decline to around 3–4 per cent under the MLFF system.

The Minister said the system could help save nearly 250 crore litres of fuel annually and reduce carbon emissions by around 81,000 tonnes, particularly benefiting pollution management efforts in the Delhi-NCR region.

He also highlighted the use of technology and sustainable infrastructure practices in highway development projects. Gadkari said processed municipal waste from Delhi is being utilised in projects such as the Dwarka Expressway and the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway, while bio-bitumen made from agricultural residue and waste materials is increasingly being used in road construction.

The Minister said the government is continuing efforts to modernise the national highway network through technology-driven reforms aimed at improving commuter convenience and reducing logistics costs.

The MLFF system also includes provisions for digital enforcement. Users with insufficient FASTag balance or invalid tags will receive electronic notices through the designated portal, with penalties applicable in case of non-payment within the prescribed period.

Earlier, the National Highways Authority of India had launched the MLFF-based tolling system at the Chorayasi Toll Plaza on the Surat–Bharuch section of NH-48 in Gujarat.
