Apparel MSMEs in Tirupur aims at Zero Defect manufacturing, seeks Centre’s support

New Delhi, Apr 19 (KNN) The apparel exporters in Tirupur are aiming at transforming the cluster into a zero defect textile hub in India. The textile associations of the district have asked government support for the same.

Responding to the call given by the Prime Minister for making Indian manufacturing sector “Zero defect and Zero effect”, Tirupur Exporters Association President Raja M Shanmugham expressed that the Tirupur industrial cluster is apt in line with this initiative.

Highlighting the major problem that surrounds the industry, Shanmugham said that more than 80 per cent of the industries in this sector are the MSMEs, the lack in terms of efficiency. Moreover since these operate at small level, they lack the updated knowledge that is required to work more efficiently in this sector.

He further said that the Knitwear fashion Institute NIFT which was established by the apparel exporters have already undertaken several initiatives to equip the industry with latest skills and techniques towards achieving a ‘zero defect’ efficiency level which will prove to show positive results.

Raja further added that the Exporters Associations are seeking help from the Central Government to help achieve the aim. “The cluster is in need of a well-planned state-funded initiative. If we are able to achieve even 10 per cent of reduction in the wastage and defects, it would help the industry save almost 2000 crore every year

Talking to KNN, N Swami, EC member of the Association highlighted the importance of the Centre’s intervention in this regard. “With the Make in India scheme on a high in the country, there is huge potential for the apparel MSMEs of our region to excel. Governments help will definitely add to the productivity of the sector” he added.

The NIFT and the Tirupur Exporters Association has estimated that the total cost for the upgradation and skill development would amount to rupees 124 crore. (KNN/ DA)
