Apparel shows highest industrial production growth in Sept, Radio/TV lowest

New Delhi, Nov 12 (KNN)  The Central Statistics Office of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation has released quick estimates of index of industrial production (IIP) for September 2013 which reveal that wearing apparel has shown the highest growth in industrial production radio, TV and communication equipment have shown negative growth.
 
“The General Index for the month of September 2013 stands at 166.3, which is 2.0 per cent higher as compared to the level in the month of September 2012. The cumulative growth for the period April-September 2013-14 over the corresponding period of the previous year stands at 0.4 per cent,” said an official notification.
 
IIP is compiled using data received from 16 source agencies, namely, Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP); Indian Bureau of Mines; Central Electricity Authority; Joint Plant Committee; Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas; Office of Textile Commissioner; Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals; Directorate of Sugar; Department of Fertilizers; Directorate of Vanaspati, Vegetable Oils and Fats; Tea Board; Office of Jute Commissioner; Office of Coal Controller; Railway Board; Office of Salt Commissioner and Coffee Board.
 
The Indices of Industrial Production for the Mining, Manufacturing and Electricity sectors stand at 114.9, 175.6 and 169.0 respectively, with the corresponding growth rates of  3.3 per cent, 0.6 per cent and 12.9 per cent as compared to September 2012.  The cumulative growth in the three sectors during April-September 2013-14 over the corresponding period of 2012-13 has been (-) 2.5 per cent, 0.1 per cent and 5.9 per cent respectively.
 
In terms of industries, 13 out of 22 industry groups in the manufacturing sector have shown positive growth during September 2013 as compared to the corresponding month of the previous year.
 
“The industry group ‘Wearing apparel; dressing and dyeing of fur’ has shown the highest positive growth of 29.2 per cent, followed by 14.9 per cent in ‘Coke, refined petroleum products and nuclear fuel’ and 11.3 per cent in ‘Chemicals and chemical products’.
 
“On the other hand, the industry group ‘Radio, TV and communication equipment and apparatus’ has shown a negative growth of (-) 25.6 per cent followed by (-) 13.0 per cent in ‘Motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers’ and (-) 11.5 per cent in ‘Office, accounting and computing machinery,” it said.
 
As per use-based classification, the growth rates in September 2013 over September 2012 are 5.4 per cent in basic goods, (-) 6.8 per cent in capital goods and 4.1 per cent in intermediate goods.  The consumer durables and consumer non-durables have recorded growth of (-) 10.8 per cent and 11.3 per cent respectively, with the overall growth in consumer goods being 0.6 per cent.
 
Some of the important items showing high positive growth during the current month over the same month in previous year include Vitamins (86.6 per cent), Cable, Rubber Insulated (68.0 per cent), Ayurvedic Medicaments (60.1 per cent), Petroleum Coke (41.9 per cent), Rice (40.4 per cent), Apparels (35.5 per cent), Cigarettes (27.7 per cent), Tractors (27.5 per cent), Copper and Copper Products (26.5 per cent), Hot Rolled Steel Coils/ Skelp (23.4 per cent), Cashew Kernels (22.7 per cent), Antibiotics and its preparations (21.8 per cent) and Petrol (Motor Spirit) (21.0 per cent).
                                                         
Some of the other important items showing high negative growth are: Hot Rolled Steel Sheets (-) 58.1 per cent, Sugar Machinery (-) 38.9 per cent, Sugar (including sugar cubes) (-) 33.7 per cent, Colour TV Sets (-) 30.7 per cent, Cylinders (-) 30.3 per cent, Polyester Chips (-) 28.8 per cent, Heat Exchangers (-) 28.7 per cent, Commercial Vehicles (-) 28.5 per cent,  Earth Moving Machinery (-) 28.2 per cent, Telephone Instruments (incl. Mobile Phones and Accessories) (-) 26.6 per cent] and Aluminium Conductor (-) 24.5 per cent.  (KNN/ES)
