Artisans to get chance to participate in overseas handicraft fairs

New Delhi, June 20 (KNN) In a major boost to the handicraft artisans, the Ministry of Textiles seeks applications from them to participate in the international fairs to enhance country’s image and export.

Under the International Marketing Scheme by the Development Commissioner of handicrafts, cultural exchange programmes will be held with other countries to demonstrate the traditional craft skills of India. The group of craft persons like the Shilp Guru, National Awardee, National Merit Certificate Holders will represent the country for display and live demonstration of their crafts.

According to the notification, the office of the Development Commissioner will also provide financial assistance to the representatives to enable them to display their traditional craft skills and create awareness about the crafts and craft traditions in front of the international customers.

Development Commissioner will also assist the participants to execute the exports.

The focus will also be on hand-knotted carpets and floor covering from here. Kashmir is known for hand knotted carpets. These are usually of silk and some woolen carpets are also woven.

In this context, the Development Commissioner of handicrafts has invited applications from the artisans to participate in the International Fair.

Handicraft exports jumped 13 per cent to USD 256.8 million in April this year, according to the data provided by the Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts (EPCH).
 
In the same month last year, these exports stood at USD 227.16 million.

The US and Europe together account for about 60 per cent of the country's total handicraft shipments.

Among the items that registered increase in April 2013, imitation jewellery saw the highest growth of 40.6 per cent, followed by wood wares 35.2 per cent, shawls as art wares 29.3 per cent and hand printed textiles and scarves about 10 per cent.

The country's total handicraft exports have met the target of USD 3.3 billion for 2012-13.

The handicraft sector employs one million people. Moradabad, Jaipur, Saharanpur and Jodhpur are the major handicraft hubs in the country catering to global markets. (KNN)
