Government Seeks Roadmap to Boost Electric Four-Wheeler Adoption Amid Slowing Growth
New Delhi, Feb 22 (KNN) In response to slowing electric vehicle (EV) penetration in India, the Ministry of Heavy Industries has urged the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (Siam) to submit a comprehensive proposal outlining strategies to accelerate the adoption of electric four-wheelers, sources told Business Standard.
The move comes amid growing concerns over the declining growth trajectory of the EV sector in recent quarters.
Top executives from Siam, leading carmakers, and officials from NITI Aayog convened with Heavy Industries Secretary Kamran Rizvi on Friday to address the issue and explore policy measures to boost EV sales.
While the specific concerns discussed remain undisclosed, the meeting reportedly focused on identifying gaps in the current EV ecosystem and formulating solutions to enhance affordability, charging infrastructure, and consumer incentives.
The government is keen to maintain India’s ambitious clean energy targets and sees EV growth as a key component.
Neither Siam nor the Ministry of Heavy Industries responded to requests for comment.
India has been pushing for rapid EV adoption through schemes like FAME II (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles) and state-level subsidies.
However, industry experts cite high upfront costs, limited charging networks, and fluctuating policy incentives as barriers slowing the sector's momentum.
The upcoming proposal from Siam is expected to outline industry needs and potential policy tweaks aimed at revitalising the market and steering India closer to its sustainability goals.
