Awards for master craft persons and weavers

New Delhi, Apr 30 (KNN) In recognition of their contribution towards preserving, promoting and enriching the traditional and cultural heritage of the country, the Council of Handicrafts Development Corporations (COHANDS) is organizing a function to give out National Awards, Shilp Guru Awards and Sant Kabir Awards to master crafts person and weavers of India for the year 2011.
The event will be held here in July 2014. In this regard, COHANDS is looking for agencies who can take care of the backdrop and printing requirements.
Evidently, handlooms form a precious part of the national legacy. This rich heritage has been kept alive by those professionally skilled weaver households that are linked with the age-old tradition of weaving.
Weavers with their skilful blending of myths, faiths, symbols and imagery provide their fabric an appeal that is distinctive. The strength of handloom lies in innovative designs, which cannot be replicated by the machines.
Significantly, every part of India has a unique craft tradition of its own. Working on a variety of raw materials ranging from stone and metal to sandalwood and clay, they create objects specific to their region.
Established in 1983-84, the Council of Handicrafts Development Corporations, (COHANDS) under the aegis of the Government of India, Ministry of Textiles, Office of Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), is an apex body of 31 State /Central Government Handicrafts Development Corporation with its well net members throughout the country.
COHANDS assists grass-root level organizations, NGOs, Self Help Groups and small entrepreneurs engaged in handicrafts for promotion of handicrafts. It helps promote and protect handicrafts products, conducts research and training programmes, provides information on market intelligence, introduces modern tools to enhance productivity, helps reduce cost and improve quality and organises exhibitions.
A facilitator, COHANDS provides the necessary impetus, thrust and direction to trade but does not engage itself in trade directly. It makes concerted efforts to maintain high quality and cultural heritage. It is also a catalytic agent for promotion of handicrafts in the domestic and global markets. It preserves and protects the intellectual rights of marginalized region/communities. (KNN/ES)
