Bangal to apply for GI tag for muslin fabric

Kolkata, July 24 (KNN) Bengal’s muslin which has made an important place in the history of textiles will soon get the geographical indication (GI) tag to mark its authenticity.

According to information provided on All India Trinamool Congress website, the West Bengal Khadi and Village Industries Board (WBKVIB) will soon apply for geographical indication (GI) for Bangla’s famed fabric, muslin.

The work for preparing the documentation, necessary for making the application, for establishing the centuries-old history of the golden fabric in the best possible way, is in its final stages, it added.

The board is collating the age-old gazette notifications, different publications in newspapers and magazines to establish the golden history of muslin in the best possible way. It is also making a detailed documentation on the steps taken in recent times to boost muslin production in the state.

In Bengal, there are primarily seven districts, which can be identified as major pockets of muslin fabric like Murshidabad, Birbhum, Nadia, Burdwan, Malda and Hooghly and Paschim Medinipur.

A geographical indication (GI) is a sign used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin. In order to function as a GI, a sign must identify a product as originating in a given place.

Darjeeling Tea was the first Indian product to get the geographical indication.
