Hyderabad, May 8 (KNN)  BHEL (Bharat Heavy Electrical Limited) Corporate R&D, Hyderabad is currently working on products to make production of solar power cheaper.

“For the first time, this division has developed a solar thermal sun-tracker to increase power output from the photovoltaic panels mounted on it,” said General Manager, Bhel Corporate R&D, S Sekar.

This is one of the newer initiatives of BHEL which has been working in collaboration with Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission to develop eco-friendly renewable energy based products.

According to Sekar, the new product will be commercially launched in the next six to eight months.

“Our prototype has shown that the tracking system can generate 25-35 per cent more energy than the conventional modules mounted on fixed tilt structures.

“The tracking is fully automatic and driven by the movement of liquid from one side of the panel array to the other side due to heat generated by solar energy,” he said to the Financial Express.

BHEL which has attained the Maharatna status is also in the process of developing nano materials for thin-film solar cells applications, which have higher absorption to fabricate photo-voltaic devices.

The public sector undertaking (PSU) has also approached the Ministry of Renewable Energy for the entire range of raw materials so it can make wafers.

Further, with an aim to improve performance of power plants, BHEL has developed an operator training simulator to help plant operators to get acquainted with normal and abnormal operations of super-critical thermal power plants.  It is also involved in developing technology to reduce carbon footprints.

BHEL’s turnover from in-house developed products and services at Rs 9,643 crore is about 20 per cent of the total turnover of the company.  The company’s intellectual capital stands at 2,170 patents and copyrights.

The PSU, reports indicate, proposes to spend Rs 1,300 crore on R&D this fiscal up from Rs 1,238 crore last year.  In 2012-13, BHEL recorded a turnover of Rs 50,015 crore and a net profit of Rs 6,485 crore and commissioned projects worth 9,328 MW capacity.  (KNN)
