Mumbai, May 20 (KNN)  Bharat Heavy Electrical Limited (BHEL) is setting up a power equipment fabrication plant at Bhandara in Vidarbha region  of Maharashtra with an investment of Rs 500 crore.

The Chief Minister of Maharashtra Prithviraj Chavan laid the foundation stone for the new unit at an event which was presided over by Union Minister for Agriculture and Food Processing Sharad Pawar.  Also present on the occasion were Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises Praful Patel, BHEL chairman and Managing Director B Prasada Rao and Directors on the Board of BHEL.

In his address Chavan said that electricity was one of the most vital elements for sustained economic growth.  We need commensurate growth in power supply and BHEL has taken various capacity and capability building initiatives towards this, he said.

Lauding the efforts of BHEL, Sharad Pawar said that the industry had a major role to play in ensuring that manufacturing growth rates were enhanced.   Power, he said was projected to grow at a much quicker pace in the coming years.

Towards this, the government has drawn up ambitious plans for adding additional 234 GW capacity to the power generating base in the XI and XII plan periods.  Having done a commendable job in ensuring self-sufficiency in power equipment manufacture, BHEL  he said was well poised to encash emerging opportunities.

BHEL will start production in the factory within 24 months from the completion of land acquisition. The turnover from the new plant will progressively rise to 1,000 crore according to BHEL.

The project once completed will provide direct employment to about 700 persons. (KNN)
