Bilaterial cooperation in food processing sector

New Delhi, Feb 7 (KNN)  The Ministry of Food Processing Industries has entered into agreements with some developed countries namely Germany and France for bilateral co-operation in processed food segments.
 
In addition, the Department of Agriculture and Cooperation has entered into a number of umbrella agreements with some developed countries like USA, France, Canada, the Netherlands, Argentina, Austria, Brazil for bilateral co-operation in the areas of agriculture and allied sectors such as agro and food processing, cold chain etc.
 
“The salient features of these Agreements/ MoUs is to attract foreign investments for Infrastructure Development of Food Processing sector, such as, Mega Food Parks, Cold Chains, Abattoirs and Food Testing Laboratories etc,” said Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Processing Industries, Charan Das Mahant in parliament today.
 
The agreements would also help in developing institutional co-operation, increasing B2B interaction through participation in important food fairs, conferences/workshops/ consultations etc.
 
Mahant said that all stakeholders including the domestic food processing industry, consumers, exporters, professionals and academic and research institutions among others would benefit from the agreements/MoUs.

The government has also entered into agreements that relate to collaboration in teaching and research in the food processing sector by the two institutions under the Ministry, namely National Institute of Food Technology Entrepreneurship and Management (NIFTEM) and Indian Institute of Crop Processing Technology (IICPT).   

Meanwhile, the Minister also said that Rs. 204.85 Crore has been released to states/UTs under the National Mission on Food Processing (NMFP) during 2012-13 and 2013-14 (upto 31.1.2014).

A centrally sponsored scheme, the National Mission on Food Processing (NMFP) was launched during 12th Five Year Plan. Under the Mission, State Governments are empowered to receive the applications, sanction and release the grants-in-aid to the eligible beneficiaries.  The Mission also provides flexibility to States / UTs in the selection of beneficiaries and location of projects etc. for the development of food processing sector.

The Schemes covered under the Mission are: Scheme for Technology Up-gradation/ Establishment/ Modernisation of Food Processing Industries; Scheme for Cold Chain, Value Addition and Preservation Infrastructure for Non-Horticultural Products;  Setting up/modernization/expansion of Abattoirs; Scheme for Human Resource Development (HRD); Scheme for Promotional Activities; Scheme for Creating Primary Processing Centres/ Collection Centres in Rural Areas; Modernisation of Meat Shops; and Reefer Vehicles.  (KNN/ES)
