Budget hotels biz increases due to Lok Sabha elections

Lok Sabha elections 2014 have given tremendous boost to the hospitality industry especially budgeted hotel, dhabhas, guest-houses, transport sector such as hiring of taxis, buses, three-wheelers, rail etc across the country, revealed a recent ASSOCHAM paper.
During the election, there has been an upsurge of 10-15 per cent tourists from USA, UK, UAE, France, Singapore etc and over 62 per cent in the domestic tourists, who are travelling for electioneering, (ASSOCHAM) findings said.
The paper reveals that more and more people seem to be visiting India from different countries during elections (April and May) an increased in number of domestic tourists in election areas.
“Foreign tourist inflow in India has witnessed steep rise of 10-15 per cent during the Lok Sabha election 2014, a good sign for Indian economy, said D S Rawat, Secretary General ASSOCHAM while releasing the paper.
ASSOCHAM surveyed nearly 500 tour operators from different cities and learnt that there is an increase in tourism business to the extent of 20 per cent. The main reason is attributed to the Lok Sabha election 2014.
Nearly 54 per cent of the tour operators said that a number of bookings have taken place in the last two weeks, mainly from UK, USA, Canada, Australia, China, United Arab Emirates, Nigeria, Singapore etc.
Many tour operators were offering the “election tourism package” which includes visit to public rallies, poll campaigns, meeting party leaders and Election Commission officers, adds the paper.
Elections 2014 contributed to fuelling travel demand with increase in rail, bus and flight bookings during election period, according to a majority of travel agents. Also, the demand for hotels and guest-houses also increased”, said Rawat.
As far as flight bookings are concerned, in Delhi, Lucknow, Varanasi, Gujarat etc in the past two weeks they were up 15 per cent, according to manyh online tour operators. A large number of coaches, cars, and taxies are being booked for travel to Varanasi from Delhi as well as around towns. The high-profile contests in Uttar Pradesh, especially in Varanasi and Lucknow, have come as a boon to travel agents in the states like Uttar Pradesh.
Foreign as well Indian students and small and medium business executives were also travelling from various countries and states to Varanasi, adds the paper.
The online travel portals have noticed an increase in bookings to destinations which are political hubs and places where major rallies have been scheduled. There is an "increase of over 15-20 per cent in rail bookings in the Delhi, Lucknow, Varanasi and about 10 per cent increase in the Lucknow-Ayodhya route, it said. (KNN/SD)
