Cabinet okays extension norm for mandatory packing in Jute, industry welcomes decision

New Delhi, Jan 4 (KNN) The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently approved the extension norm for mandatory packaging to be done in Jute Material, the move is being seen as a welcoming step by the industries involved in Jute business, Indian Jute Mills Association said.

Under the mandatory packing norm, 90 per cent of food grains and over 20 per cent of sugar products are to be packed in jute.

Talking to KNN, Manish Poddar, President of Indian Jute Mills Association said that the extension is certainly a positive decision for the jute manufacturing units.

The extension of the mandatory norm for the upcoming jute season that extends from July to June has brought positive energy in the sector, Poddar said.

He further informed that his association along with different stakeholders have been engaged in a dialogue with the government and the extension has come as a result of continuous engagement.

Over the approval by the cabinet, Union Textile Minister Smriti Irani said that with the extension in place, over 3.7 lakh workers and 40 lakh farmers are to benefit.  The Minister gave the information in a tweet from her official twitter handle. (KNN/ DA)
