CAIT bats for a Cyber Commission to enhance cyber security; writes to PM

New Delhi, June 1 (KNN) In the wake of growing need of cyber security, the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) has suggested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to form a Cyber Commission to strengthen cybersecurity in both public as well as private sectors.

In a letter to the Prime Minister, the traders’ apex body highlighted that India is emerging as one of prominent technology hub globally with steep rise in usage of internet and mobile commerce which may pose certain threats to cyber security.

To enhance cyber security in the country, CAIT has suggested the PM to form a Cyber Commission to strengthen cybersecurity in both public as well as private sectors while protecting privacy; ensuring public safety , economic and national security; fostering discovery and development of new technical solutions; enhancing partnership between Centre, State, Local Self Government and the private sector for development of cybersecurity technologies, policies and best practices.

CAIT National President B.C.Bhartia & Secretary General Praveen Khandelwal, in the letter, suggested that the proposed Cyber Commission may identify and study actions necessary to further improve cybersecurity awareness, risk management and recommend steps for adoption of best practices in private sector and at all levels of Government.

“It is noteworthy to mention that US President Barak Obama has recently constituted a similar commission on the same lines to augment cybersecurity in USA,” CAIT highlighted.

In its communication, the CAIT has suggested that THE Cyber Commission may review the present state of cybersecurity in India and hold consultation with various stakeholders on the issues related.

It further said that in conducting its review, the commission must be careful to avoid duplicating or unintentionally impeding ongoing cybersecurity initiatives of the Government of India.

The commission’s authority should be advisory in nature limited to preparing cybersecurity recommendations for the Government of India’s consideration with an established end date for commission.

The CAIT officials suggested that in carrying out its charge, the commission should develop recommendations pertaining to steps to improve adoption of Digital India particularly in untapped areas, SME sector, Farming Community & others.

The CAIT has suggested that the members of the Commission must be some expertise in cybersecurity, digital economy, SME and Corporate sector.

The members must also be expert in risk management, information technology, privacy, identity management, Internet governance and standards, government administration, digital & social media, communications etc. (KNN Bureau)
