CAIT to protest today in 300 cities against Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’ India visit

New Delhi, Jan 15 (KNN) The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) will stage protests across 300 cities including national capital on Wednesday against Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’ India visit.

CAIT, which has 7 crore small traders as its members, has been alleging that e-commerce companies including Amazon and Flipkart are flouting the norms of the country’s FDI policy over the past two years.

Notably, the Competition Commission of India (CCI) has ordered to probe in the business practices of e-commerce players on the petition of Delhi Vyapar Mahasangh, which is a member association of CAIT.  Jeff Bezos’ visit to India this week, during which he is likely to meet key policymakers including Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, CAIT secretary General Praveen Khandelwal while appreciating the order of CCI given on Monday for investing each allegation levelled by CAIT with the Government and at various forums, said, ''for the first time some concrete step has been taken against Amazon and Flipkart who are continuously violating the FDI policy in indulging into a vicious racket of controlling and monopolising not only the e commerce but even the retail trade as well.''

“The next 60 days will be very crucial for the trading community. We will ensure that our agitation against the malpractices of e-commerce companies such as Amazon and Flipkart reaches a logical conclusion. We are reiterating our commitment to compel these e-commerce companies to comply with provisions of FDI policy in letter and spirit.” he added.

Khandelwal further said that Amazon and Flipkart have caused huge GST and Income Tax revenue loss to the government and CAIT will soon meet Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and will urged her to institute a investigation into avoidance of GST and income tax liability on both e-tailers.

CAIT also said that 7 crore traders’ members have been adversely impacted due to alleged malpractices of e-commerce companies such as Amazon and Flipkart.
