New Delhi, Jun 19 (KNN)  In an effort to publicise the tourism potential of the Himalayan region, 73 per cent of which lies in India, the Union Minister of Tourism, K Chiranjeevi today announced the launch of campaign to promote the product globally.

Ironically, the announcement coincides with the flood disaster in Uttarakhand that killed over 150 people and left stranded over 20,000 pilgrims who were visiting the hilly districts of the state as part of the Char Dham Yatra.

The Campaign will be launched on September-27, World Tourism Day which will be followed by the first major event – the Himalayan Run and Trek event in October.

“To be called 777 days of the Indian Himalayas,” the campaign will have a twofold objective, one to attract more international tourists to India during the lean summer season and second, to remind the world that 73 per cent of the Himalayan region is in India,” said an official notification.

The domestic tourism industry has welcomed the decision that was taken soon after a meeting with the officials of the Adventure Tour Operators Association of India (ATOAI).
Significantly, it is not only the Himalayan states that would be promoted by the campaign but also the gateway cities that house airports and railway stations.

Chiranjeevi pointed out that visitors to region will also want to see tourist attractions at the gateway cities, places of arrival or departure.

The campaign will help change the image of India – from one of plains to having attractive destinations in the Himalayas; likewise, from a winter destination to a summer destination as well.

While tourists will be offered attractive discounts from ATOAI members during the period of the campaign, the Ministry will consult state governments, airlines and other stakeholders to offer similar discounts.

ATOAI has also agreed to organize trekking, river rafting, Himalayan run, mountain and bike events as part of the campaign.

In the meantime, relief maps of the Indian Himalayas in different States in sections are being put together, spread over a width of seven feet.

The Ministry will launch this map along with a brochure on Himalayas at the launch of the new campaign.  (KNN)
