CBIC permits major private sector banks for payment of Customs duties

New Delhi, 5 Jan (KNN) The Central Board of Indirect Taxes & Customs has enabled custom duty payment through ICEGATE e-payment portal using internet banking of private sector banks such as HDFC, Axis Bank, ICICI Bank and Karur Vysya Bank.

Earlier the payment was only allowed using a public sector bank, which affected the payment process.

Federation of Indian Micro and Small & Medium Enterprises (FISME)- the chief MSME body, raised this issue before the Finance Minister also.

“Debarring private banks form payment of Customs duties used to create a lot of problems for those who had only one bank and that was private. One had to make payment through Demand Draft issued by PSU banks which due to their lackadaisical attitude would take sometimes more than a day and by the time the dollar rate would change requiring another Draft,” says Neeraj Kedia-Managing Director of Chakradhar Chemcials Pvt Ltd based in Muzaffarnagar and former President of  FISME.

For ICICI Bank, their corporate customers can pay customs duty through the Bank’s Corporate Internet Banking (CIB) and mobile banking app InstaBIZ, while retail customers can do so through the Bank’s retail internet banking platform.

The customers can make online payment by selecting ICICI Bank fr0m the list of banks on the website of Indian Customs Electronic Gateway (ICEGATE).

Hitesh Sethia, Head- Transaction Banking, ICICI Bank, said, “We at ICICI Bank are thankful to Central Board of Indirect Taxes & Customs for giving us the opportunity to enable digital payments of customs duty for our customers. This facility enables millions of ICICI Bank customers to conveniently pay customs duty digitally through ICEGATE website. This is in line with our endeavour to continuously enhancing convenience to our customers by offering them innovative products and services.”
