New Delhi, Aug 13 (KNN)  Keeping in view the demand for organic textiles in the global market and the potential in India for producing such textiles, Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has developed certification standards, which when implemented will strengthen farming families.

The draft Indian Standards for Organic Textiles (ISOT) has been developed in consultation with the organic stakeholders.

“Implementation of ISOT will strengthen the position of farming families,” said Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, Nirmala Sitharaman in the Rajya Sabha today.

In India, organic silk, cotton and hemp fibres are being made by tribal rural women (silk worm rearers, yarn makers and handloom weavers) in the States of Jharkhand, Orissa, Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.

According to the Textile Exchange Report 2012-13, the global market for organic textiles is USD 7.4 billion.

While the National Steering Committee (NSC) has approved of the draft ISOT for implementation, it has been forwarded to the Ministry of Textiles for validation and comments.  (KNN/ES)
