New Delhi, Jun 28 (KNN)  Finance Minister P Chidambaram has said that skill development was imperative for providing jobs to millions of people passing out from various schools, colleges and professional institutions across the country.

“Skill development is needed to fill the significant gap between the actual skills of large number of candidates passing out from various schools, colleges and professional institutions across the country and the skills needed in the industry,” he said while addressing the Board of National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) yesterday.

The Finance Ministry has set-up an ambitious target of providing skills to 500 million people in ten years thus training 50 million people every year.

Chidambaram further said that since NSDC works with the industry, the industry should drive the NSDC agenda and not vice versa.

Meanwhile, understanding the importance of skill development, the Prime Minister has set-up a Cabinet Committee on skill development in order to overall coordinate and monitor the progress of skill development programmes in different sectors among others.

The government according to the FM was committed to skilling as it helps people in finding-the right vocation for themselves, while helping them gain self-confidence.

He also flagged off the Indian delegation consisting of 24 participants who will be participating in 22 skills during the World Skills Competition scheduled to be held in Leipzig, Germany from July 2-7. (KNN)
