Kochi, Feb 25 (KNN)   In a bid to expand market and popularise its products across the country, the Coir Board is seeking franchisees to sell its merchandise.

“Hindustan Coir, a unit of Coir Board under Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME), Government of India, proposes to appoint business houses and enterprises in important towns all over India, as approved franchisees of Coir Board for the sales of coir products,” said an official notice.

Potential franchisees are those with an area of 150 sq ft, with minimum Rs two lakhs as investment on stock.

India exported coir products worth Rs 1,116 crore in 2012-13.  In order to boost sales, the Coir Board has planned to open 1,000 sales outlets across India, according to an earlier notification.

Further, in November last year, a cross country road show to popularize coir products mainly produced by the small sector was held to coincide with the world coir fair.

This featured the Coir Kranthi Express, a specially-decorated bus that went on a three month journey to celebrate the diamond jubilee of the Coir Board.  The express was flagged off from Kanyakumari displaying varied coir products, including geo-textiles and handicrafts.

The Coir Board has also been taking initiatives to modernize the industry by adoption of modern technology in production and processing of coir in the spinning and weaving sectors.

India produces 60 per cent of the total world supply of white coir fibre. Over 50 per cent of the coir fibre produced annually throughout the world is consumed in the country.   (KNN/ES)
