Commerce Ministry to address problems of the tea industry

New Delhi, Aug 12 (KNN) Representatives of tea planters’ associations, exporters, tea brokers, major tea houses and small tea growers have been invited by the Union Commerce and Industry Ministry to apprise about the problems faced by the industry.

The meeting has been called upon on August 14 in the national capital.

Bijoygopal Chakraborty, President of the Confederation of Indian Small Tea Growers’ Associations said, “In many gardens the management is finding it tough to keep their estates feasible. The two major tea producing states, Bengal and Assam where the minimum tea wage is still to be fixed."

Alok Chakraborty, an Intuc leader in Siliguri said, “Tea workers are migrating to other sectors and fixation in minimum wage can resolve this problem and check the problem of migration”.

BJP MP of Darjeeling, Raju Bista and Alipurduar’s John Barla, have raised this issue in Parliament. Bista has highlighted the need to reopen the closed gardens and sought central schemes for tea workers and firms.
