Congress MP seeks financial assistance for development of handloom clusters in Telangana

New Delhi, April 5 (KNN) Congress MP Komatireddy Venkat Reddy met Union Handlooms and Textiles Secretary U P Singh and urged him to release funds for modernisation of handloom clusters in Telangana.

In his representation to the secretary, the Congress MP said that important handloom clusters like Pochampally, Gadwal, Siddipet, Warangal, Karimnagar, Narayanpet and Armoor are making their contribution to the world of handlooms with the best of designs.

Komatireddy Venkat Reddy said,“There are about 20,000 geo-tagged handloom weavers working with 40,000 ancillary workers in Telangana. The design patterns of Pochampally (tie and dye), Siddipet (gollabama) and Gadwal (silk) products are world famous. A major part of the tie and dye industry falls in Bhuvanagiri, a constituency represented by him, he added.

It is proposed to upgrade the skills of weavers to cater to the global market needs, and strengthen the value chain system in the handloom industry. “I request for sanction of financial assistance of Rs 22 crore as central grant for 22 clusters development under the national Handloom development programme (NHDP),” he further added.
