Crude steel production shows remarkable growth

New Delhi, Jun 12 (KNN) Crude steel manufacturing in India has shown huge potential for growth as the sector grew by 4.3 per cent in 2012, touching 90 million tonnes.  

“Capacity of steel production in the country has increased from 66 million tonnes in 2009 to about 90 million tonnes in 2012,” said Minister of Steel, Beni Prasad Verma during a meeting of the Parliamentary Consultative Committee of the Ministry of Steel.

The Minister stressed the importance of conserving raw material resources in the country and briefed members about the government initiative to boost crude steel production.
The government initiative has certainly shown results as the per capita steel consumption has risen to 60 kg in 2011-12.

Further, members were briefed about the global and domestic steel scenario, functioning of SAIL and its performance on various parameters. Details of marketing initiatives and modernization and expansion plans were also discussed.

The performance of SAIL’s production has been phenomenal in producing saleable steel of 12.4 million tonnes, which is 112 per cent of rated capacity.

They were also informed that the company had achieved profit after tax of Rs 2,170 crore during the year 2012-13.

In the meantime, the total steel production of neighbouring China in 2011-12 was 689.192 MT.  (KNN)
