New Delhi, Sept 12 (KNN) The Ministry of Tourism is planning to create a hub of heritage and culture, mostly open air in Kala Ghoda here, similar to the Times Square in New York.

“The vision behind Kala Ghoda is to provide popular entertainment as well as access to heritage and culture for the benefit of international tourists, domestic tourists and the people of Mumbai.  This should result in a few themes and additional jobs being created,” said Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Tourism and Culture Shripad Naik, in an official release today.

With assistance from central government, the Department of Tourism, Maharashtra will create the basic infrastructure to help private sectors investing in the project.

“The Government of Maharashtra/local authorities, Mumbai will select the various private parties, each of which will undertake a specific responsibility,” said Naik.

He said that the Ministry of Tourism will sanction Rs 5 crore for phase-I of the project in Kala Ghoda, the location seen as best suited for the purpose of creating the hub.

The cultural hub will have attractive features including a 15 foot high Flag of India, large electronic billboards, drinking water fountains with reverse osmosis-treated water, high resolution web cams and film and cartoon characters.

It will also have facilities and activities that make it suitable for becoming the Indian equivalent of Times Square such as art galleries, music shops, places to eat, artists sketching visitors and an access to the fashion street shopping area. (KNN/ST)
