CUTS Intl-FSSAI organizes National Consultation on ‘Food Labelling Regulations for Safe & Healthy Food’

New Delhi, Aug 17 (KNN) CUTS International and Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) are today organizing National Consultation on ‘Food Labelling Regulations for Safe & Healthy Food’.

Pawan Agrawal, CEO, FSSAI along with Rajeev Kumar, Director (NCD), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India along with representatives from World Health Organisation (WHO); representatives from Industries and food associations; CSOs; International and National Experts on public health and food safety will gather on a common platform to discuss on the draft regulations to achieve consensus to strengthen the regulations.

The issue of HFSS (High Fat, Sugar & Salt) and trans-fats in food products is leading India as the global capital of cardiovascular diseases. With the changing lifestyles, the industrially produced trans-fatty acids (TFAs) resulting in cardiovascular diseases is responsible for more than 5 lac deaths per year globally.

In a bid to encourage consumers to opt for healthier options, FSSAI has introduced draft ‘Food Safety and Standards (Labelling and Display) Regulations, 2018 and had invited suggestions from all stakeholders.

The Consultation is being held considering the importance of the subject and taking the advocacy effort forward.

FSSAI has come out with India’s first Draft Food Safety and Standards (Labelling and Display) Regulations, 2018 which significantly improves on the present gaps when it comes to helping consumers to make an informed choice on what products they want to consume.

The consultation aims to ignite a constructive discussion where everybody gets a chance to express their valuable thoughts on the proposed draft regulations to understand the relevant issues from everyone’s perspective, which will definitely contribute in strengthening the draft Food Safety and Standards (Labelling and Display) Regulations, 2018 for greater welfare of common consumers in India.
