Delhi Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI) up in arms against GST on pre-packed food

New Delhi, July 18 (KNN) Delhi based association of traders, the Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI) is organising a Mahapanchayat on July 20 objecting against the GST on pre-packed and labelled items.

The GST Council in its 47th meeting had unanimously decided to go for a rate hike on several daily essential items, which will be implemented from Monday (July 18).

With the decision coming into force customers will have to pay five per cent GST on pre-packed and labelled food items such as atta, paneer and curd, besides hospital rooms with rent above Rs 5,000.

Opposing the move, CTI Chairman Brijesh Goyal said this is the first time since Independence that dal, rice, flour, cereals, curd, lassi and similar items have been taxed.

The central government’s GST collection has reached almost 1.5 lakh crore rupees every month.

However the centre has also imposed tax on ‘tax-free’ items.

Goyal said that this is the reason why the CTI has called a mahapanchayat of traders on Wednesday.

Traders will decide a strategy against the new rule, said CTI chief.  (KNN Bureau)
