New Delhi, Mar 21 (KNN): Tiles and Kerbstones manufactures today welcome the Delhi government’s move to boost the use of stone-waste for manufacturing of tiles, which are otherwise dumped on city outskirts.

“Exempting levy of Value Added Tax (VAT) on tiles and Kerbstones manufactured from construction, stone-waste is environment friendly move as tonnes of stone-waste (malba) are generally dumped either on city outskirts or on roadside,” said Ajay Gupta, Dayal Spun Pipes Pvt Ltd, Meerut.

Earlier, presenting Delhi Budget 2013-14 yesterday, the State government proposed to exempt levy of VAT on tiles and kerbstones made from construction stone-waste, encouraging the small manufacturers who can use them as raw material.

These unused stone-wastes take time to break into pieces and mix with soil and dumping it may cause environmental hazard, said Gupta.

“During manufacturing of tiles, many of them get destroyed and can’t be used for further construction. There are no takers for damaged tiles and we suffer losses, government’s move will encourage small manufacturers to make use of broken or destroyed tiles,” said Anand Raj, Raja Tiles, Noida.

Solid waste is one of the major problems of metro cities and such manufacturing units contribute in it so this move may solve the issue, Raj added. (KNN)
