New Delhi, Nov 5 (KNN) Feeling heat due to increased public scrutiny of frequent transformer failures due to technical faults, which has led to the Enforcement Directorate launching crackdown against CRGO traders, the unscrupulous transformer manufacturers’ lobby is now resorting to fraudulent tactics to divert attention away from the poor quality of steel being widely used in manufacture of transformers to jack up profits at the cost of utilities.

For example, a letter sent to Power Minister Piyush Goyal purportedly on behalf of Rajasthan Transformer Manufacturers Association (RTMA) has turned out to be bogus, as confirmed by RTMA’s Secretary Alok Agrawal.

“In reference to your mail, we categorically deny having written any such letters. The letter head and signatures are forged,” Agrawal confirmed to ITMA.

“The detailed letter duly signed by the President and Secretary of RTMA in this regard is enclosed herewith for your necessary action,” he added.

A similar letter sent on behalf of ITMA to the power minister earlier in August had also turned to be bogus.

Import of used CRGO is happening in the country due to the complicity of officials from the Bureau of Indian Standard and customs, both of which are supposed to check it.

The practice of utilities to procure equipment from lowest bidder is also not being helpful in checking import of non-prime electrical steel which goes into manufacturing of transformers.

There are growing cases of transformers burning after installation, putting public safety at risk.

"Besides, prime CRGO the bogus letter of RTMA also discredited amorphous core material which is a new technology  being used for manufacture of transformers  for over  two  decades in India," industry body ITMA said.

Bureau of Indian Standard is already seized   with a preparation of Indian Standard for amorphous core material. This material has  properties of reducing the losses  by 70%  and thus is  proving very helpful  in containing the  overall T&D losses  of   power system particularly in  distribution network, which is  responsible for  maintaining supply  for the end users, it said .

"All the discrepancies given about the use of amorphous material is a lobby of the same unscrupulous elements that are not technically proficient in manufacturing of transformers with amorphous core material.   As it is a new technology and  requires  investment  for  additional infrastructure  which these  small time lobbyist  are not ready to  invest in their business venture and only interested to make un due profit without any loyalty  to the country," ITMA added.
