New Delhi, Jan 1 (KNN) Development of State of the Art technologies for Indian capital goods sector is a focal agenda. Under the Scheme for Enhancement of Competiveness in the Indian Capital Goods Sector, the Department has announced to have supported Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-M) for developing technologies for Industries, mainly MSMEs.

Under the project 11 machine tool technologies will be developed for Industry partners by IIT-M with financial assistance under Centre of Excellence component of an existing scheme for up gradation of technology for the capital goods sector.

This is a major step in industry-academia-government partnership in the capital goods sector, especially since most of the industry partners are in the MSME sector. Development of this CoE will be the first of its kind in the machine tools sector and will help developing important technologies which are presently not available in India.

The project will be an eye opener for the Indian MSMEs and MSME Association to the window available for upscaling of technologies, a crucial issue for enhancing competitiveness for the capital goods sector, both in domestic and export markets.

At the same time a couple issues need to be brought to the attention of the policy makers. Already endowed with considerable amount of funds for R&D from various Government departments, most of our premier technical institutions are suffering from time over run in most of the projects, mainly due to shortage of lead researchers / mentors and there is an immediate need for stakeholders’ review of such projects.

Ideally, the R&D centres of these premier institutions should be run on a business model like the globally acclaimed Fraunhofer Institute. And as the department of Heavy Industries has already signed a MoU with Fraunhofer, twinning of their operational and delivery models in Indian institutions should be the first task. (KNN/ DB)
