DIPP will be the nodal department to deal with issues of copyright protect and IP in the country

New Delhi, Apr 1 (KNN) The area of copyright has shifted to DIPP which will be the nodal department to deal with all issues related to copyright in the country, said Rajiv Aggarwal, Joint Secretary, Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion (DIPP), Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

He said this while addressing a seminar on 'Managing Copyright in Publishing' organized by FICCI, DIPP and World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).

The programme aimed to highlight the key issues of piracy and counterfeit in publishing.

Delivering the keynote address, Francis Gurry, Director General, WIPO emphasised that in the last 20 years, copyright has moved from the periphery to the centre of the economic systems. This is not just because of the increased importance of intellectual property in a knowledge economy, but it is a natural consequence of the role of the essential mechanism that governs production, distribution and consumption of knowledge works in a society. 

Emphasising the India was the first signatory to the Marrakesh Treaty, Gurry highlighted that the treaty will enable national exceptions in copyright across the globe to speak to each other. This is particularly important in publishing.

Naresh Prasad, Assistant Director General, Chief of Staff, Office of the Director General, WIPO, said the seminar on copyright in publishing, is a very timely intervention of the role that copyright will play in publishing in India.
