New Delhi, Dec 9 (KNN) The East Delhi residents will now have to shell more money from their pockets for taxes as the East Delhi Municipal corporation commissioner Amit Yadav has proposed to hike the property tax.

On Tuesday, East Delhi Municipal Corporation Commissioner Amit Yadav presented budget proposals for 2016-2017 at a meeting of the Standing Committee.

The proposals included a 2 per cent and a 1 per cent increase in property tax rates for residential properties in A and B categories, and C, D and E categories respectively.

Apart from this a he also proposed an education cess, a betterment tax and a professional tax.

The local civic body has to generate more revenue because of the whopping Rs. 2,196.19 crore deficit in the next financial year.

“There are provisions in the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act to impose all these taxes,” said commissioner Yadav.

The education cess, which would be 5 per cent of property tax, will be used to pay salaries of 5,000 teachers working in EDMC schools. Yadav admitted that some employees had not been paid for months.

The betterment tax would be charged in areas that have seen improvement in infrastructure and quality of life, stated the commissioner. (KNN Bureau)
