10 Semicon Projects Approved Across States, Rs 1.6 Lakh Crore Investment Proposed

New Delhi, Feb 14 (KNN) Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology Jitin Prasada has said that as many as 10 semiconductor projects worth around Rs 1.6 lakh crore have been approved, including two fabs and eight packaging units.

Responding to a question in Parliament, the Minister said the government is rolling out several initiatives to boost electronics and semiconductor manufacturing. They include Semicon India Programme, PLI schemes for IT hardware and large-scale electronics, Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS), Scheme for Promotion of Manufacturing of Electronic Components and Semiconductors (SPECS), Electronics Manufacturing Clusters (EMC), and M-SIPS.

Given the foundational role of semiconductors in the economy, the Government launched the Semicon India Programme with an outlay of Rs 76,000 crore to develop semiconductor and display manufacturing in the country.

Key Achievements Under Semicon India Programme
Major investments under Semicon programme include Micron’s Rs 22,516 crore facility in Gujarat, Tata Electronics’ Rs 91,526 crore fab with PSMC in Gujarat and Rs 27,120 crore packaging unit in Assam, and CG Power’s Rs 7,584 crore unit in Gujarat with Renesas and STARS.

Other approved investments include projects by Kaynes Technology India Limited, HCL-Foxconn (VSIPL), 3D Glass Solutions Inc., SiCSem Private Limited, Continental Device India Private Limited, and Advanced System in Package Technologies Private Limited, covering fabs, packaging, silicon carbide, display driver ICs and high-power semiconductor devices across multiple states.

Strengthening Design Ecosystem
The Minister said 24 chip design projects have been supported through startups, of which 16 have completed tape-outs and 13 have secured venture capital funding. Around 350 universities have been given access to Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools, benefiting approximately 65,000 engineers.

Highlighting India’s strength in semiconductor design, he noted that more than 20 percent of global semiconductor design engineers are of Indian origin. Recently, Qualcomm taped out its 2nm chip designed in India, underscoring the country’s growing capabilities.

Many approved companies under the programme have entered into technology partnerships with global semiconductor firms. The Union Budget 2026–27 has also announced ISM 2.0 to further expand the semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem.

The Minister said the development of advanced manufacturing capabilities will position India as a reliable and responsible stakeholder in the global semiconductor value chain, strengthen strategic partnerships and enhance India’s share in global electronics markets.
