MeitY And European Commission Ink Deal On Advanced Electronic Signatures

New Delhi, Feb 3 (KNN) The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Communication Networks, Content and Technology (DG CONNECT) on Tuesday signed an Administrative Arrangement on Advanced Electronic Signatures and Seals.

The agreement, signed by MeitY Secretary and DG CONNECT Director-General, aims to enhance India–European Union (EU) digital cooperation by enabling interoperability of electronic signatures, electronic seals, and Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) systems, in line with Indian and EU laws.

MeitY will implement the framework through the Controller of Certifying Authorities (CCA), under the provisions of the Information Technology Act, 2000.

Under the arrangement, India and the EU plan to link their trusted lists of recognised service providers, allowing easier validation of electronic signatures and seals across borders.

This is expected to streamline cross-border trade by enabling Indian exporters and EU buyers to sign contracts, invoices, and compliance documents digitally, reducing transaction time, cost, and verification effort.

The pact is particularly expected to benefit Micro Small and Medium Enterprises and strengthen legal certainty and trust in India–EU digital trade, while laying the foundation for deeper cooperation in the future.
