Taiwanese Semiconductor Giant MediaTek Open to Manufacturing Chips in India

New Delhi, Oct 10 (KNN) Taiwanese semiconductor giant MediaTek has expressed openness to manufacturing its chips in India once the country develops sufficient fabrication capabilities. 

The move aligns with India’s growing efforts to establish a strong domestic semiconductor industry and reduce reliance on imports.

MediaTek, which supplies chipsets to leading smartphone brands like Xiaomi, Samsung, Oppo, and Vivo, currently follows a fabless model—designing chips and software while outsourcing production to global foundries such as TSMC, Intel Foundry Services, and GlobalFoundries.

In an interview with The Times of India, MediaTek India Managing Director Anku Jain said the company would consider producing in India once local manufacturing capacity is ready. 

“If consumption is in India and manufacturing is in India, that’s good for us. Things can definitely be done under the Make in India initiative,” Jain noted.

The Indian government has launched a $10-billion incentive program to attract semiconductor investments and boost local production. 

Several projects are already underway, aiming to make India a major player in the global chip ecosystem.

Experts believe MediaTek’s interest could serve as a strong endorsement of India’s semiconductor ambitions. 

If the company begins chip manufacturing in India, it could significantly boost local electronics production, create jobs, and strengthen supply chain resilience.

As the demand for chips rises globally, India’s push to build its fabrication ecosystem may attract more global players like MediaTek in the coming years.
