New Delhi, Jan 24 (KNN)  According to the Energy Conservation Act of 2001, it is mandatory for consumers and firms to appoint energy managers and auditors who will put in place measures to ensure energy efficiency.

The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) has been empowered to specify the qualification criteria and procedures for the certification of Energy Managers and qualifications for Accredited Energy Auditors.

The task of the Energy Manager is to conduct a professional energy audit and recommend technically and financially sound proposals to reduce energy costs in a firm.  On the other hand, an Energy auditor conducts internal audit of individual equipment / system once a year and submits copy of reports to Energy Manager with recommendation on action.

The 15th National Certification Examination for energy managers and energy auditors is scheduled to be held in August 2014.

The passing of the National level certification examination is the qualification for an Energy Manager to be appointed or designated as Certified Energy Manager.

On the other hand, for accreditation of Energy Auditors, an energy auditor shall be considered for accreditation if, he/she is a certified energy manager and has passed the examination in “Energy Performance Assessment for Equipment and Utility Systems” conducted by the Bureau, besides meeting other criterions.

It will be the accredited Energy Auditor who will be allowed to conduct the mandatory energy audit under the Energy Conservation Act 2001 and not the Certified Energy Auditor

BEE has retained National Productivity Council (NPC) as the National Certifying Agency to conduct and administer the National Certification Examination for Energy Managers and Energy Auditors.

The proposed examination centres are Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Cochin, Dehradun, Delhi/NCR, Goa, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jabalpur, Jaipur, Kanpur, Kolkata, Mumbai, Nagpur, Patna, Pune, Raipur, Ranchi, Thiruvananthapuram and Vadodara.

The mission of BEE is to "institutionalise" energy efficiency services, enable delivery mechanisms in the country and provide leadership to energy efficiency in all sectors of the country. The primary objective is to reduce energy intensity in the economy.

The Bureau would obtain inputs and co-opt expertise from private sector, non-governmental organisations, research institutions and technical agencies, both national and international, to achieve its objectives.  (KNN Bureau)
