Domestic Gas Production Dips In November As LNG Imports Increase: PPAC

New Delhi, Jan 2 (KNN) India’s gross natural gas production declined 2.4 percent year-on-year to 2,900 million metric standard cubic metres (MMSCM) in November 2025, even as liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports increased 3.7 percent to 2,812 MMSCM, according to the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell (PPAC).

Higher Imports Offset Domestic Production Dip

Natural gas available for sale during the month stood at 5,233 MMSCM, registering a marginal 0.9 percent increase compared with November 2024, reported ET.

The rise was supported by higher LNG imports, which led to decline in domestic production. On a provisional basis, total gas availability for consumption was reported at 5,675 MMSCM, PPAC said.

After accounting for internal consumption and operational losses, net domestic gas available for sale was estimated at around 84 percent of gross production during the month.

Fertiliser Sector Tops Gas Consumption

The fertiliser sector remained the largest consumer of natural gas, accounting for about 30 percent of total consumption. City gas distribution (CGD) followed at 24 percent, power generation at 10 percent, refineries at 9 percent and petrochemicals at 6 percent.

Overall gas consumption during the month was estimated at around 195 million standard cubic metres per day (MMSCMD), the report said.

Cumulative Consumption Declines in FY26 So Far

Total natural gas consumption during April–November 2025 declined 3.8 percent year-on-year to 46,599 MMSCM. PPAC attributed the decline largely to lower offtake from the power and refinery sectors, while consumption by CGD and petrochemicals recorded growth during the period.

State-wise Consumption Trends

State-wise data showed that Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra were among the largest consumers of natural gas in November. Total national consumption during the month was estimated at 195.35 MMSCMD.
